LOUNGE SOUNDS
Wendy Robin

By Charlie Carter

Belting out soul and R&B classics at the Grand Hyatt's JJ's bar, Wendy Robin cuts a striking figure. It comes as no surprise to discover that the towering stunner from Dominica (via Toronto) got her first big break by winning a series of beauty pageants. "I was Miss Dominica and Miss Toronto," says Robin, just a week into her stint  at the plush bar. "It was great exposure - I won the talent rounds through singing and that brought me to the attention of a lot of people." Although she began singing professionally as a teenager with her brothers and sisters on their Caribbean island, Robin's career took off once she arrived in Toronto and began getting signed to theatrical shows. "I'm quite well known in Canada for those shows and the CDs I've recorded."

Q: What's the best thing about being a hotel performer?
A:
Apart from meeting lots of different people and travelling  to different parts of the world? Staying in wonderful hotel rooms. Being able to do what I love for a living every night is wonderful.

Q: Are there any songs you dread being requested?
A: Britney Spears - those are bad. But there's one worse - I can't remember the name of it, but it's by Dido. It's quite a good song - about a sinking ship - but it sends me to sleep. I sing soul and R&B. I like to entertain, not send the audience to sleep."

Q: What was the most memorable gig you ever played?
A: Toronto's Caribana Festival last year [an annualfestival celebrating the city's Caribbean cultures]. That was incredible. I played to more than 10,000 people. The crowd and excitement were wonderful."

Q: What's the strangest thing that's happened to you on stage?
A: Quite often women get a little too excited and jump onstage and grab at me. It's done in a sexual way - I think they just get excited by the music.

Q: How did you get to Hong Kong?
A: I'd been here before, working  at the Excelsior, so I knew Hong Kong. I had also played in Macau, Bangkok and Singapore. I work with an agent as a recruiter for Asian gigs and I suppose, in a way, I recruited myself.

Q: Is it different playing to a hotel crowd than at your own gigs?
A: Definitely. Hotel shows are more demanding because they're not paying to see you. At one of your own gigs, they know what to expect. But a hotel audience has to be won over. It keeps you on your toes.
